  • New Year’s Eve Celebration at McMenamins Each year, McMenamins Sand Trap Pub offers a fabulous New Year’s Eve celebration in Gearhart. Enjoy dinner and drinks, a toast at midnight, and awesome live music from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The event is open to guests 21 and over, and admission is free. View the pub’s events calendar for more information.

  • Manzanita’s Wacko New Year’s Eve Midnight Parade. According to beach connection.com, “A little known secret about Manzanita’s New Year’s celebrations is its New Year Parade at midnight, which has been a surreal little local tradition that’s been happening for at least a few years. Generally, people just come out of the local businesses and perform an oddball parade of sorts – proof again of the kooky and creative side to the fun-loving locals. Now, only the San Dune exists in Manzanita, but some may be coming from nearby The Wateringhole in Nehalem or Sea Shack in Wheeler. In the past, there was, among other things, a large dragon costume. It’s quite a spectacle. In recent years, the city grudgingly gave it’s okay for the parade, partially on the basis it would happen with or without the permit.”  We don’t know about the bar crowd, but we’ve participated, and depending on the weather, it’s really fun!

  • New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge Polar Plunges are some of the most popular New Year’s Day events on the Oregon Coast. Mostly tackled by locals, visitors are also getting into the act of running into the frigid waves of the Pacific.  One of the most notable is the plunge on Manzanita Beach. “I started doing this about 12 years ago and it’s just grown ever since,” said Janice Gaines, owner of Spa Manzanita. “Last year, we had about 500 people and roughly 300 of them took the plunge.” This year, the Polar Plunge in Manzanita will be located at the north end of Manzanita Beach, about one mile north of Manzanita along the waterfront. Parking is limited, however, plungers can park in the neighbourhood above the area. There’s also a plunge in Arch Cape, just a few miles up the road. All ages are welcome.

  • Nehalem Bay First Day Hike Another great way to ring in the New Year is by taking a refreshing hike through Nehalem Bay State Park. You can take in the sights and sounds, observe wildlife, and enjoy views of the bay. This guided hike goes around the Nehalem Bay Loop Bike Path, which is just under 2 miles. The trail is paved, and guests of all ages are welcome. Be sure to dress for any inclement weather and bring water, a snack, and your camera!

Tips for Your New Year’s Oregon Coast Trip

The Oregon Coast in winter is always unpredictable. The weather can be surprisingly warm and sunny, or cold and rainy. We do get some incredible winter storms! The best way to prepare for your New Year’s Eve getaway is to be flexible. If your hike gets rained out in the morning, consider visiting a shorter trail in the afternoon if the weather clears. You can also spend the day dining, shopping, and sightseeing. Planning plenty of indoor and outdoor activities will help you have a great time no matter the weather!
