Cannon Beach Bakery opened around 1910 in their original Seaside bakery location. After a fire destroyed their building in 1935 they relocated their bakery to Cannon Beach and created the Cannon Beach Bakery.

New owners Gib and Deanna Hammond purchased Cannon Beach Bakery on April 13th of this year, and have been busy adding their own touches, while keeping fan favourites. We're thrilled with their commitment to keeping this treasured Oregon coast bakery in the community.

The secret to Haystack Bread at Cannon Beach Bakery

Did you know that Cannon Beach Bakery crafts over 10,000 loves of Haystack Bread each year? Former co-owner Dan Christensen would start the process around midnight.

According to Christensen, the Haystack Bread is a cross between a French bread and a white bread, all hand made from a hard-gluten flour combined with sugar, shortening, milk, salt and water.

At one a.m. after the Haystack Bread dough has risen, Christensen would then create balls of the dough and roll them into balls on their original butcher-block work surface. Each ball was placed an oiled pan, then stacked on a baking rack for their second rise.

Last, a topping of rice flour, sugar and salt was sprinkled over the top of each dough ball, giving the Haystack Bread its crunchy rough coating fans adore.

Manzanita Beach Insiders Tip: Our favourite way to eat Haystack Bread from Cannon Beach Bakery? A generous cut of fresh bread which a big chunk of Tillamook Cheese on top - cheddar, of course.

And be sure to buy an extra loaf. It makes great toast with jam fresh from the Cannon Beach Farmers Market, or yummy French toast.
