Manzanita's Wacko New Year's Eve Midnight Parade. According to beach connection.com, "A little known secret about Manzanita’s New Year’s celebrations is its New Year Parade at midnight, which has been a surreal little local tradition that’s been happening for at least a few years. Generally, people just come out of the local businesses and perform an oddball parade of sorts – proof again of the kooky and creative side to the fun-loving locals. Now, only the San Dune exists in Manzanita, but some may be coming from nearby The Bay Way in Nehalem or Sea Shack in Wheeler. In the past, there was, among other things, a large dragon costume. It’s quite a spectacle. In recent years, the city grudgingly gave it’s okay for the parade, partially on the basis it would happen with or without the permit."
We don't know about the bar crowd, but we've participated, and weather permitting, it's fun!

We're just crazy enough to jump into bone chilling water to start the New Year off right! Manzanita Polar Plunge. 10:30 am gathering, 11:00 am Plunge Time. Look for the big fire on Neahkahnie Beach just north of the intersection of Reed Road and Nehalem Road.
Also look for a Polar Plunge in nearby Arch Cape - they claim to have doing this for the last 50 years, at the forefront of this movement!
First Day Hikes. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) joins together with America's State Parks in sponsoring First Day Hikes. Start the New Year off right and join an Oregon State Park Ranger or Naturalist on January 1, 2019. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is offering these hikes in eight Oregon State Parks along the coast on New Year's Day. Park rangers or volunteers will lead most of the hikes. Take in the sites and sounds as you walk through coastal habitats, exploring native wildlife and history. Day-use parking fees are waived for all visitors at participating parks on January 1.
First Day Hikes aims to encourage healthy lifestyles by getting families outside to enjoy state parks. Participants should dress in layers, wear sturdy shoes and bring water as well as a camera or binoculars for wildlife viewing. In case of inclement weather, contact the park directly to find out about cancellations. The free Oregon Coast First Day Hikes are from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm unless otherwise noted.
